Family History of Mark ETHERIDGE

I have been researching my family history since I was about 15 years old, inspired by my maternal grandmother who had loads of photographs and stories to tell. Initially I concentrated on my maternal side. I have now traced all lines back to at least 1841, and have managed to trace all 16 of my 2 x great grandparents, and most of my 3 x great grandparents. As well as going much further back on many lines. This website shows some of the research I have completed on my family history.

I am researching all my lines which cover many parts of England with a branch or two in Scotland. Check out the pages on my maternal and paternal lines to find out more about these families.

I am also very interested in the Forest of Bowland area of Yorkshire (now Lancashire), and I have been researching all the families with connections to the Slaidburn area. See the pages ‘Forest of Bowland’.

If you are interested in churches and memorial inscriptions in the Forest of Bowland area, and beyond, then look at the ‘Yorkshire Churches and Graveyards’ section, where there is a list of almost 40 indexes available. I enjoy visiting graveyards, and have spent a lot of time photographing and indexing these graveyards.

I have also photographed and indexed a number of village War Memorials in the same area.

  1. Thank you for your hard work and helping me find graves of my ‘Cockshott’ ancestors at Long Preston Baptist Chapel

      • Hi Mark I am also an Etheridge born in Sunderland. My Dad’s name was also Thomas Leslie (known as Lal ) my brother was Robert Gamsby .what a coincidence.

      • Hi Olive. Yes! We are 2nd cousins. Your grandfather Robert Gamsby was brother to my grandfather Thomas Leslie (known as Little Lel). My grandfather was with your grandfather when he was killed in 1942. Also your grandmother Kathleen was at my parents wedding 1963. Was wondering if you had any old photographs of the Etheridge family? As you can see I have researched the Etheridge line quite extensively. Mark.

  2. Hi Mark, thank you for this. I am hoping to be in Gisburn this August 11 2019 and I am wanting to see the grave stones and plaques of my family John Thornber Lofhtouse and Private Anthony Lofthouse (Paythorne Wesleyan Chapel), and more. You website has really helpful! As well as your list, as I notice there are some Thornbers there as well as some other family names in my family tree.

    • Hi Lisa,
Thanks for your comment. Glad you have found my website useful to find the final resting place of your ancestors. I hope you do get to visit Gisburn in August. I will email you further details.
      Mark.

  3. Hello Mark
Thanks for sharing your Shotley peninsula ancestry. My son-in-law is descended from the Frosts and Aldertons, and thereby related to the Garrods and Rush Families, and huge family of Abbotts, many of whom were known to me through various routes such as work and college, as we are still living in Suffolk.

Your research has taken me back a further generation on the Aldertons.

    Regards, Steve

  4. Upon researching my ancestors Hannah Bradley born 1780 Horton in Ribblesdale . Her father was John Bradley , I would be most appreciative if any information could be forthcoming .I have visited Horton on several occasions but have been unable to gain access to church records HannahBradley gave birth to a son Robert in 1805 and it was recorded in Settle and I find her in Rochdale Lancashire aged 60 on 1840 Would love to find any info prior to 1780 if possible

    • Hi Malcolm. I don’t have this Hannah on my tree. Looking at the registers I can see that she was baptised on 16 April 1780 at Horton to John Bradley, labourer, of Nether Lodge. I don’t know where John was from sorry. Nether Lodge is north east of Selside, nr Horton, and I have a number of relatives living there in the early 20th century – the earliest connection to Nether Lodge I have is Robert Germain born there in 1757 (possibly a connection through that line?)

  5. Hi Mark, thank you for all your hard work! This has definitely put some missing pieces together for my lines. Have you, by chance, come across the surname “Molyneaux”? I’m stuck on George Rudd (1756–1822) married to Margaret Molyneaux (abt. 1746-1818). Thank you in advance!

    • Hi. Thanks, glad you have found it useful. Yes this George is grandson to my 6x great grandparents George Rudd & Helena Briggs. Margaret was daughter of Edward Molyneaux and Jennet Smith who married 1736 at Waddington where their first five children were baptised. Margaret seems to have been baptised at Great Mitton, but was living at Storth at time of marriage to George Rudd in 1779 at Slaidburn.

  6. Hi Mark, stumbled across your page , I am from the Isherwood family, my great great grandparents Thomas and Hannah ( nee Topham ) lived at Foulscales Farm. I’m just wondering if you have found any connections.
    many thanks
    Tony

    • Hi Tony,
Sorry, not sure I replied to this? I am very distantly related to this couple, and have researched this family in some detail. Is there anything specific you were looking for information on?
      Mark.

  7. Mark…………..thanks for all the hard work. Regarding Rathmell cemetery………….several years ago when I was in the area I obtained a copy of the plot plan of the church cemetery and then a listing of names. Two Coates were on the list and were buried at location 27 on the plot. Do you have any more info on them? They do not show up on your list from there.

    • Hi Wayne. As you say there are no Coates on my list for Rathmell church. That means their was either never a gravestone, it no longer exists or was too worn for me to transcribe. If you want to send me details of the people you are looking for I can see what I have on my database. Mark.

      • Henry Coates die june 1873 in 81st year and Margaret died May 20 18.. in her 81st year both listed as being in location 27 on the plot plan for the graveyard which I assume you have

      • No I don’t have the plot plan unfortunately. Is this Henry who married Margaret HELM? If so they are very distant relations that I haven’t followed beyond 1851 census.

      • Yes, Henry is the son of my g, g, g father Richard that married Jane Holdgate in Gisburn
