Chapel-Le-Dale, Ingleton Fells, St Leonard’s Church

Chapel le Dale, May 2017 (6)

This church was originally founded as a chapel of ease to St John the Baptist parish church at Low Bentham. It has had a few different names, but the name Ingleton Fells chapel was the one most commonly used until the 20th century. Since the 1940s it has been informally dedicated to St. Leonard.

The chapel was probably built in the 14th or 15th centuries. The present building dates from the 16th century, being substantially renovated in 1869.

The graveyard was enlarged in the 1870s, when many people were buried here during the construction of the Settle to Carlisle Railway. There is a memorial in both the church and churchyard to this.

In the 1930s the graveyard was further extended on the other side of the road, with consecration marked by the erection of the lychgate.
